To quote Abraham Lincoln, "The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read.” So you see if you suggest a good book you'll be my best friend. Isn't that great incentive?? I thought so.

Lost in a Good Book
As you know I love, love, love to read. I'm pretty much always reading something and often times more than one something. I usually have one book in my purse and one by my bed at all times. But now I've hit a point where I don't know what to read next. In fact I've been reading Life of Pi a little on the slow side so that I don't run out of things to read. (Which is just ridiculous - the slow reading, not the book. The book is excellent.) So that's where you come in - I want suggestions. I'll read pretty much anything, so any genre is OK with me. I especially like a good series so I can read the whole set in a row... So let me know your favorite books and what you just couldn't put down to the point of neglecting spouses, children, jobs and homes.

I had to check your goodreads list to make sure none of these were listed. My favorite book of all time is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I really loved "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson (I may have spelled that wrong.) and some other guy. I also like David Sedaris, but I've learned that his brand of humor doesn't speak to everyone. Also, he can be a dirty bird sometimes.
I look forward to our new level of friendship. :)
Enders Game...and the whole series.
It is a sci fi futuristic setting. Where in the furture the Earth is fighting an alien race...and they are training CHILDREN to fight the war...
I loved it. And it is a series. Google it! :)
I love series also. I can also second Melissa's recommendation of Three Cups of Tea. Also "Whatever it takes" by Paul Tough about Geoffrey Canada's work to educate Harlem. Amazing.
So - Series I like. The Sue Grafton mysteries. The titles all have letter names. A is for Arson or something like that. She's up to letter T and they are nice and great. Not too much language - mostly a strong female lead character.
I can't believe I'm admitting this where people might be a cruel judge, but I also laugh my head off at Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, starting with "One for the money" I think the West Regional Library has all of them on the shelf, due to my requesting the entire series from around the county. It's a little PG-13+ sometimes but very rarely do I laugh out loud while reading and I just never seem to stop giggling with them. Easy read.
the end. When you work through all these series, I'll tell you more. I can't let everyone know how reading "lite" I like to be.
I read 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' by David Sedaris and really enjoyed it so I will definitely have to check out his other books... Yesterday I looked him up on amazon and read part of 'Naked' and was already laughing out loud!
I've also read 'Enders Game', which I loved, but not the rest of the series - so I'm going to have to get those.
And I am definitely going to check out the Stephanie Plum series. I love fluff reading! Sometimes you just need to take it easy with a little light reading - I mean it can't be 'Anna Karenina' all the time...
Thanks for all the suggestions - and keep 'em coming!
Like Melissa, I loved "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "Three Cups of Tea." I also loved "Ender's Game" (but I know you've read that.)
You might enjoy books by Elizabeth Gaskell and I also love the series of books Laurie R. King wrote with Mary Russell as the main character. (Not as fond of her Kate Martinelli books but they're okay.)
I forgot to ask if you've ever read "Huckleberry Finn". Its a must-read as far as I'm concerned. (Just keep it in historical context.)
okay I know these are all gonna sound weird but here it goes...
western - louis l'amour. I know I've never been into western things but this is my friend's favorite author and she forever loaned me one of his books. I was skeptical at first and than I couldn't get enough. He has tons of books!
sci-fi/fantasy - terry goodkind. paul loves the sword of truth series and got sonny hooked on them as well.
last western....tony hillerman. written mostly with the navajo reservation as the backdrop it's a good mystery series.
if i can think of any more i'll add it
I realized a while back that I had never read some basics. Like the whole Chronicles of Narnia series, which I am greatly enjoying by the way! I second mom's suggestion about the Laurie R. King series that starts with The Beekeepers Apprentice. Those are GREAT! I've also been enjoying some chicklit mystery series by Caroline Haines and they all have the word 'bones' somewhere in the title. You know, that book I took to ohio with me and just gave to mom to give back to you, "Them Bones"? That's the first in the series and I really like those. The 8th one just came out this week. There's another of the same type by Nancy Martin that are easy and pretty good, I think the first one is called "How to Murder a Millionaire". Those are also fun.
Happy reading!!
